SWAMP stands for (Students Working And Making Progress). At Ganiard we have two thirty minute time slots for SWAMP in the areas of reading/language arts and math each school day for Kindergarten – 3rd grade classes. During this time ALL students are getting the “extra” help they need in these academic areas. Title I students work with Title I teachers during these time slots. Below is a list and description of some interventions we use with our Title I SWAMP groups.
Leveled Literacy Intervention
Leveled Literacy Intervention is a system (curriculum) used with grades K-3. LLI is a small group reading intervention program designed to bring students to grade level achievement in reading. This program helps build self-confidence, decoding skills, phonics, fluency and comprehension.
- LLI lessons provide systematic instruction in phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness – the ability to hear and manipulate distinct sounds in words – is one of the best predictors of how easily children will learn to read.
- Phonics Instruction – Lessons provide preplanned instruction in phonics based on a developmental scope and sequence for letter / sound relationships and spelling patterns.
- Fluency is developed through the integration of rereading texts in daily lessons. Research provides evidence that “repeated and monitored oral reading improves reading fluency and overall reading achievement.”
- LLI lessons provide explicit instruction on comprehension. During the introduction of new books and during the discussion after reading, teachers take pre-planned actions to demonstrate effective comprehending strategies, expecting children to take them on immediately as they read, write, and talk about the text. During reading, teachers prompt children to use these strategies; after reading, they help the children focus on the strategies. Comprehension strategies are organized along a leveled continuum, making this instruction sequenced and systematic.
Ganiard Elementary Title I Parent and Family Engagement Policy
It is the mission of the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools and Ganiard Elementary School, together with our community, to inspire each student through exceptional educational opportunities to become an engaged citizen in a diverse, changing world. To achieve this goal, Ganiard Elementary School staff and Title I parents have jointly developed and agreed upon a Title I Parent and Family Engagement Policy located on the Ganiard School’s homepage . The policy will be annually distributed in writing to all parents. The following are the main components: 1. Establish a Title I Parent Partnership Committee 2. Offer a variety of opportunities to help parents learn more about what is taught in school 3. Encourage strong parent involvement by offering activities, workshops and other programs
